Speed Dating Reflection (DC 5 Speed Dating Activity by Angelo Gomos)

1.   Who among those you got to meet in round 1 would you like to get to know more/has revelations that surprised you the most/left the most impression? Why?

I’d have to be honest with my answer. I know that it would be awkward to state this but it is what I truly feel and what I have come to realize. If I were to choose among Erika Criste, Tonette Magallanes, or Ian Bicar, I’d have to say Ian. There are plenty of things that I know about Ian – that he is smart, well-mannered, coming from a prominent family in Malaybalay, is a good photographer and excels in that field, and is a good person to others. But as much as I know about him, there are more things that I didn’t know about him. And because of the speed dating activity, I got to know more about him which seemed to kindle my intrigue and interest.

Ian was a basketball player in high school, was part of his school’s magazine publication, and, most surprisingly, the prom king in his batch. As a friend of Ian in college, I didn’t know that he was an achiever in high school. He is usually silent, composed, reserved, sometimes not taking classes seriously, and tardy. I didn’t know that he went through a lot that made him reach a higher level of achievement. But it’s true that the form alone isn’t necessarily the definition of a person – it is the substance that matters. There are things that I may not know about Ian, but I sure know that even though we sometimes see him as someone different on the outside, he is someone special, lovable, and extraordinary on the inside.

2.   After round 2, what were the things said to you that you already know of? What are those that surprised you? Who told you this/these?

I am white/pale-skinned, a kind friend, silent, understanding, and comfortable to be with. At least that’s what I heard from among Krizia (Nicole), Erika Criste, and Krista Villamore. Although some of the things they said to me were complimentary (and somehow obvious on my part because these are the things that people usually say to me or about me), there are things that they said which surprised me. Krista said that before she knew that I am (how should I say this formally without stating it in an urban slang?) “non-straight”, she thought that I was handsome and quite good-looking. What struck me the most is that she even mentioned that I am intelligent in classes, that I am not scared to voice out my opinions when it comes to discussions or ask any questions to the teacher.

Krizia, on the other hand, is a personal friend of mine. I honestly think that we already know each other quite a lot. We actually made the speed dating activity like a recollection for the both of us – asking for apologies for whatever mistakes we had done to each other, recalling past memories that we shared that bonded our friendship tighter, and creating statements that comforted the both of us as friends. Surely, I learned a lot of myself in this round. I even think that this round is much better than the first round. I learned about myself through what others think about me, and at the same time, I was able to share to them what I think about them.

3.   How did you feel about yourself after round 1? After round 2?

During the first round, I learned to love myself and accept myself for who I am because of recollecting about my past achievements that made me worthy to be a goal-oriented human being. It served as my subtle motivation, knowing that I had achieved things in my life, I will be able to aspire for more. And I believe that I still have plenty of dreams and ambitions in my life that I have yet to reach, challenges that I have yet to encounter, and roads that I haven’t trodden yet. But one thing’s for certain, I will be able to live life to the fullest if I take the straight path in glorifying God in whatever I do.

During the second round, I am affirmed that I am capable of pleasing others as much as I please myself. I didn’t know that I am the type of person whom other people find comfortable to be with and for friends to cannot live without. Through other people’s perception about me, I have learned many things about myself that I didn’t even know. The important thing is, I can build good and firm relationships with other people if I stay humble, practice a good conduct, and always compose myself to be virtuous in my ways.

Communication Models (DC 5, Angelo Gomos, Block A)

Communication Models

Linear Model

The Linear Model of Communication often depicts a one-way process of communication. It often involves the sender, the message, the channel, the receiver, and the effect. What makes it unique from other communication models is that the Linear Model does not consist of a feedback. It mainly displays the process of sending the message of the sender to the receiver often in the presence of noise.

As a video example for the Linear Model, I chose the scene in the film entitled, “2012”. In this scene, the president of the United States made his speech through the television towards the masses. The president acts as the sender of the message. Television is the channel. While the technical difficulties are considered as the noise. The people or the masses, on the other hand, serve as the receiver.

Interactive Model or Interaction Model

The Interaction Model has a feedback between the sender and the receiver. They often share a message with each other once they understood with one another as they communicate. It is a two-way process in which the sender sends his message to the receiver, and as the receiver begins to understand the message, the receiver eventually sends back his message or his response to what the sender sent. Basically, the sender and the receiver could interchange roles. Thus, making them interact with each other.

As an example of a video for the Interaction Model, this video shows an interview between a world-renown host or interviewer, Ellen DeGeneres, and a popular Hollywood celebrity, Alex Pettyfer. The two of them acted as both the sender and the receiver by their exchange of words, understanding one another through this process of communication.

Transactional Model

In the Transactional Model, the sender can be the receiver of a message at the same time that the receiver can be the sender as well. It highlights the fact that communication is an on-going, fluid, or simultaneous process that makes the sender become a receiver (or the other way around) to the point of understanding.  This communication process is always practiced when one person engages a conversation with another one. Sometimes, simple gestures from the receiver of the message while the sender is still directing his message can still send a fragment of information.

In the video for the Transactional Model, acclaimed and veteran pop superstar, Madonna, was being interviewed by one of Britain’s famous hosts, Graham Norton. We can see a scene in the video where Graham tells Madonna the name of his dog, Madge, which has some similarities to the popstar’s name. Madonna then flicks her gaze towards somewhere else, signifying that naming the dog as Madge was somehow derogatory for her as she slightly shares the same name of a pet. When Graham tells her that Madge was a rescue dog, Madonna shifts the direction of her gaze once again, showing all the more awkward-ness in the interview while the audience laughed.

Light in the Tunnel

Light in the Tunnel

Researcher:  Jose Angelo Lorenzo Gomos

There is light at the end of the tunnel, but no one ever said there was a free pass going to that part, because there is none. At times, things seem to go exactly the opposite of how we want them to be. And just when we begin to feel hopeless, opportunity comes knocking on the door; the least we expect it.

Christian Rey Udang Raluto, also known as Chan, is a 3rd year Mechanical Technology student at Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan. Next year, he will be doing his On the Job Training (OJT). The end of his OJT then will mark the end of his college life. He will finally go up the stage to receive his diploma as a graduate of Mechanical Engineering.

Two years ago, Chan graduated high school at the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS). Everything seemed to be in the right place until his father broke the news that almost sent Chan’s dream to become an Engineer flashing down the toilet: his parents can’t afford to pay for his college education.

“Abi naku mao na gyud to, na maka-tungtung na jud ko sa college. Kaso lang, wala may pang-tuition akung mga ginikanan,” Chan said. [I thought that was it, that I would be able to enter college. But the thing was my parents had no money to pay for my tuition.]

Despite the setback, Chan didn’t think that his life would spiral down and that his dreams would be put to waste.

One day, opportunity came knocking on the door. An American businessman named Henry Howard, whom his father has previously worked for as a bodyguard, offered financial assistance for Chan’s college education. To top it off, he agreed to send Chan to a prestigious school – Xavier University.

“Kung makapasar daw ko sa entrance exam, mahatag sa akua ang scholarship,” Chan stated. [If I pass the entrance exam, the scholarship will be given to me.]

He passed the entrance exam and got the scholarship. The deal was that Chan should maintain a Q.P.I. of 2.5 to keep his scholarship going, which he has no trouble of doing despite the occasional bumps that every student goes through.

At home, Chan is both a responsible brother (being the eldest of four siblings) and a loving and helpful son. Chan is just 18 years old to date, but he has already embraced that he is the bread winner of the family and will someday have to help with the finances. He enjoys going with his mother to the market to buy food and supplies for the family. He boasted that he gets warm hugs from his little siblings each time he and his mother come home from the market. When there are no house chores, Chan spends his free time playing basketball with his little brother and some friends.

Although both of his parents have work, their income is far from stable. His mother works as a house help, while his father does different kinds of work – whatever is available.

Chan dreamt of becoming an Engineer since he was little and although that is not the course he is taking up right now, he hopes to one day build a mansion or at least a cozy house for his family.

Right now, Chan is just thankful that he has the opportunity to get a college degree through the scholarship he got from Henry Howard.

“Without the scholarship, dili ko maka eskwela sa Xavier. Gina try naku akung best para maka pasar sa Xavier. Mao na siya ang way para maresponsible ko,” Chan stated. [Without the scholarship, I will not be able to enter Xavier. I try my best to pass in Xavier. This is the way for me to become responsible.]

He has yet to know where he is going to practice his OJT but he certainly hopes he gains enough experience to help him deal with life after college.

The end of the tunnel is within reach and the light has never been brighter for Chan. Although the scholarship was given to him, he had to earn everything that he’s enjoying now.

He has this to say to his sponsor, Henry Howard: “Thank you for the support and God bless. My success is your success, too. Without you, I will never be able to reach my dreams.”

And to his fellow scholars, he leaves this message: “Work hard, never give up, and just make things happen. Always believe that everything is possible.”

Chan certainly made things possible.

Ber-y Ber-y Grey (DC 3 Opinion Aricle)

Ber-y Ber-y Grey

By Jose Angelo Lorenzo S. Gomos

As we enter the month of September, many people are excitedly raving about the Christmas season. As a tradition and belief for most Filipinos, the start of the typical Ber month (usually, the month that ends with the syllable, –ber) is the advent of Christmas. And even though the season’s aura is now brewing within our country, there is one issue that had sparked the attention of millions of fans (of a particular trilogy) around the world.

And it is about the chosen actor and actress for the lead roles of the film adaptation of the critically-acclaimed worldwide bestseller, Fifty Shades of Grey.

Fifty Shades of Grey is the first book of an erotic romance trilogy that entails a sadomasochistic relationship between a wealthy and incredibly good-looking bachelor, Christian Grey, and a recent college graduate, a naïve and virginal lady, Anastasia Steele. Despite breaking records as the fastest bestselling paperback of all time (beating the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling), and in spite of spending numerous months at the top of the New York Times Bestsellers List, the trilogy received plenty of controversies and issues regarding the unethical transcendence of contemporary literature by transforming porn into words.

The Fifty Shades Trilogy is the start of a new literary development as it is the first erotic piece to have been popularized around the world. Usually, the kinds of genres that fit to the interest of the readers around the globe are romance (Nicholas Sparks and Danielle Steele), fantasy (J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and J.K. Rowling), horror/thriller (Dean Koontz and Stephen King), Young Adult (Stephenie Meyer, John Green, David Levithan, and Rick Riordan), and philosophical/spiritual (Paulo Coelho and Mitch Albom). Per se, the Fifty Shades Trilogy broke its boundary as one of the most famous erotic novels of all time. I believe that even though the trilogy has been criticized a lot by overly conservative joy-killers, the trilogy marks a history in the field of literature as being a masterpiece that unrelentingly explores and ventures the side of innate sexuality of human beings. Call that a literary development!

As the trilogy’s fame increased, news had been announced in 2012 that there will be a film adaptation for it to be released in the near future. Fans had been elated by the good news, knowing that their favorite trilogy will finally be on the big screen.

But what kept their excitement burning?

It was the choice of the actor and actress that will play the lead roles of the trilogy.

As months had passed, there were plenty of speculations, suggestions, and comments given by the fans regarding who will exactly play the lead roles for the film adaptation of the popular trilogy. For the role of Anastasia (commonly known as Ana), actresses such as Emma Watson, Nina Dobrev, and Lilly Collins were considered for it. But they didn’t confirm to have accepted. As for the role of Christian Grey, Hollywood heartthrobs like Channing Tatum, Ian Somerhalder, and Matt Bomer were suggested by the fans but they just remained to be of the fans’ interest. Not one of them seemed to have tried auditioning for the role. Alex Pettyfer, the actor who received a worldwide fame from the film, I Am Number Four, was rumored to have auditioned for Grey’s part but no news of him being accepted was released.

For many months, not a single news of who will play the particular leading roles was unleashed. It was ambiguously mysterious for quite a while which made the fans of the trilogy anticipate and expect for more.

But the long wait is over as we enter the first month of “-ber”.

Last Monday (September 2, 2013), the author of the erotic romance novel, E.L. James, posted on her Twitter account the names of the actor and the actress who will play the major characters of the film:

“I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey,” the author tweeted and within hours, she added another tweet, “The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Charlie Hunnam is a 33-year-old British actor who first starred in television shows like Queer as Folk, My Wonderful Life, Young Americans, and Undeclared. He also currently stars in the hit TV series, Sons of Anarchy. Most sci-fi fans must have known him in Guillermo del Torro’s The Pacific Rim which was just released recently this year and earned him a worldwide popularity.

Dakota Johnson is 23-year-old American actress who is a neophyte in the film and entertainment industry. The newbie actress is the daughter of Miami Vice-star, Don Johnson and his ex-wife, Melanie Griffith. She appeared in the TV show, Ben and Kate and acted for minor roles in the films, The Social Network, 21 Jump Street, and The Five-Year Engagement.

I was shaking my head when I heard the news about this. And I know that I am not alone. Numerous fans expressed their negative reaction towards the choices for the leading roles. Many disagreed about Charlie Hunnam playing Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele. I can sense the beginnings of inconsistencies of the upcoming film adaptation from the original trilogy as both the actor and the actress, are, in my opinion, unfit for the roles.

Although I am not really an avid fan of the trilogy, I have read the first book which I think was interesting and new. I am quite open-minded about these fresh and original genres when it comes to literature. As a massive book reader, I accept all kinds of new things in the field of literature. Fifty Shades of Grey isn’t so bad at all. If J.K. Rowling could write about wands and flying brooms, Stephenie Meyer about fangs and glitters, E.L. James did professionally and expertly well with chains and neck-ties.

When it comes to books turned movies, I can sense that most films took some liberties from the books and turned them into something on their own which is far different from the idea of the book. The film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey is headed to that direction. Based on the physical appearance of Charlie and Dakota, fans will look at Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in a very different way when they watch the film.

In the book, Christian Grey is described as having a chiseled face, a dark auburn hair, gray eyes, and a tall and slenderly masculine body – features that completely fit the looks of Ian Somerhalder. Charlie Hunnam never fitted in any of these descriptions. Charlie has a blond hair, a buff body, and a round-shaped face. He is nothing like Christian Grey at all. Whereas Anastasia Steele is thin, brunette, and awkwardly pretty. From the way I see it, Emma Watson fits the description perfectly and Dakota didn’t even reach halfway of these features, not with her long blond hair, and wide forehead.

And I think that many fans would agree with me.

On Telegraph, there was one fan who posted his statement regarding the choices, “…very disappointed with the choices, especially for Anastasia. She [Dakota] looks nothing like Ana.” And on their website, they showed the results of a poll that asks the fans about what they think of the choices playing for the lead roles. For Charlie, there were 881 votes (40.21%) who say that they agree and a dominating value of 1,130 votes (59.79%) who disagree. For Dakota, there were 798 votes (45.68%) for those who agree which were outnumbered by the number of votes of those who disagree, 949 (54.32%).

Physical features aside, I doubt that the movie version will even reach halfway of the success of the book it is based upon. Judging by the reactions of the fans of the trilogy, even by the announcement of who will be playing the lead roles, they reacted negatively and most of them disagree with it. I am guessing that there will be fans who will not support the movie as their expectations were turned down by the chosen reality. As for me, I’d still stick with the books though. Like they say, books are mostly better than the films.

On the bright side, the author, E.L. James, is totally fine with the choices. In fact, she apparently showed her support in her tweets when she announced who will be playing Christian and Ana. Although when she was asked who she was originally picturing in her mind while writing her novel, she stated that she imagined Robert Pattinson as Christian Grey and Kirsten Stewart as Anastasia Steele. The novel itself was formerly a fanfiction of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer as James herself was an avid fan of the series. In fact, the names of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele were Edward Cullen and Bella Swan in the original manuscript. As every author’s dream is to have their works transformed into films, E.L. James no doubt is excited for the upcoming movie whether or not the fans love or hate the chosen actor and actress.

The upcoming film will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and will be released by Michael De Luca Productions, Trigger Street Productions, Focus Features, and Universal Pictures. The release date will be on August 1, 2014. I think this will be another controversial film that will be banned in numerous countries (for its erotic scenes which happen in most part of the book) which had never happened to a movie ever since Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code hit the big screen in 2006. But what’s the problem with that? Films, not only books, can create and try for new genres that are unique and are different from the usual kinds that they produce. They can transcend and adapt the famous trends that people follow and practice these days. If books can exploit eroticism, films, for the sake of their audience’s interest, can follow as well.

Whether or not the film will be critically or negatively reviewed with the actor and the actress who will star in it, it will be a huge stepping stone for Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson’s promising careers and could serve as the foundation of their ascending fame and increasing success in the film and entertainment industry.

Possible (DC 3 Feature Story by Angelo Gomos)

Possible

(Written by Jose Angelo Lorenzo S. Gomos)

Dreams in life – are they possible to happen or do they just remain in our imagination, forever trapped inside our wishful thinking?

Our dreams have their own limits. Life naturally has its barriers. The line of possibility of achieving our goals and aspirations in life is sometimes thin, weak, and easily snapped. But what if we try to break these barriers and believe more in ourselves that we can make the impossible, possible? After all, we are the ones weaving the thread of our fate.

Every student’s dream is to graduate college, earn a prestigious degree, find a job, become successful, and in turn, help their family. When students are often asked what they genuinely want to achieve, they often answer that they want to acquire success through education. Naturally, that is what all students want.

But education, in factuality, requires money.

But what if a student comes from a financially-challenged family? Will that student still be given the best education he deserves?

One student made it possible.

Christian Rey Udang Raluto is an 18-year old student from Xavier University. Known as “Chan” to his family and friends, he is taking up Mechanical Technology and is currently in his third year in college.

Chan smiling for the camera

Christian Rey Udang Raluto

Chan is one extraordinary student. Although he grew up from a family that is barely below the average line in financial terms, he was raised well with the right virtues and an ethical conduct. He is a scholar in the university, determined to keep his grades stable and intact. Despite all of his struggles in life, Chan plans to attain success in every possible and inspiring way.

Chan was born on the 20th of December in 1994. The eldest of four siblings, his parents told him that he already has the obligation to become the bread winner of the family when he graduates college. This propels him to finish his education and to further his dreams in life. He aspires to help his family someday, not to return the favor of them taking care of him, but he thinks that it is the right thing to do. He believes that his family is his refuge in times of trouble and that they will forever abide by him when he needs them the most.

Chan’s mother works as a house help and his father is a freelance worker. The family earns their income through each of the parent’s job but, when asked if their financial sources were enough for them, Chan said that they were just minimal, that they could just supply the most basic of their necessities (e.g. food on the table, electricity and water bills, and allowances). Despite the challenge in keeping up with their financial stability, Chan’s parents are able to provide love and support for their children. Love in the family, is something that money could not buy nor could be exchanged with.

Chan’s home is in Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. He grew up there as a kid and he still lives there with his family to this day. He recalled the events from his past when he was still a child, playing with his neighbors on the streets along their home. He said that it was one of the most valuable memories in his life. He also told the events when he would go with his mother to the market to buy supplies of food for the family. It was one his hobbies to help his mother with shopping inside the marketplace. And when he and his mother would go home, bringing with them their plastic bags filled with vegetables and fruits from the market, they would be welcomed by the excited hugs from his little siblings.

As a child, Chan dreamed to become a professional engineer. He said that he’d love to build things, especially to build a “mansion” suitable for his family to live in.

“First dream jud naku in life kay ang mahimung engineer. Katung bata pa ko, ganahan gyud ko sa mga buildings ug gi-unsa sila pag construct.” [My first dream in life is to become an engineer. When I was still a kid, I liked to look at buildings and wondered how they were constructed], Chan said in the interview. His dream was as high as the buildings he used to marvel at.

He was enrolled in West City Central School in his elementary years and then transferred to MOGCHS (Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School) when he reached his high school days. Even as a student in the primary and the secondary level, Chan was good with his grades. His favorite subjects were Science (particularly Physics and Chemistry) and Filipino. Not only was he doing well with his academics, he also excelled in the fields of sports. He loves to play basketball and participated in various games during his high school intramurals. He also hung out with his friends during his spare time every weekend or in break time in school. He was a student-athlete in his years in high school.

Chan graduated from high school in the year 2011 and upon achieving this stage of success, he was excited to move on to college for the possibility that he could become a professional engineer someday. Finally, he thought, he will be able to take a step closer to his dream.

But things went not according to what he planned for his future when his father confessed to him that he probably won’t be going to college for the reason that his family was unable to support him for a college education.

His hopes were shattered as he realized that his dream of becoming an engineer will be put on hold.

“Abi naku mao na gyud to, na maka-tungtung na jud ko sa college. Kaso lang, wala may pang tuition akung mga ginikanan.” [I thought that was it, that I would be able to enter college. Only then I knew, my parents had no money to pay for my tuition], Chan said.

It was during this situation wherein he began to ask himself some significant questions regarding himself, his family, and the future before him. “Will I ever become successful in life? Will I be able to support my family someday? What will become of me when I do not get a decent college degree? What will be my job? How will I earn for a living?”

Chan believed that there was more to life than the problem he was facing at that moment. He didn’t want to give up on his dream and he didn’t want to give up on himself. He didn’t want to put his life to waste as well as be a burden to his family.

Fate turned out to be kind to him when his ambition had risen anew when a Good Samaritan came to the rescue.

Henry Howard, an American businessman, who was also a past-employer of Chan’s father (Chan’s father was a bodyguard of Henry Howard before), offered his help to give the possibility and the opportunity for Chan to enter college – and not just in any college, but the prestigious university of Ateneo de Cagayan.

His hope was rekindled.

“Kung makapasar daw ko sa entrance exam, mahatag sa akua ang scholarship.” [If I pass the entrance exam, the scholarship will be given to me], Chan stated.

He took the entrance exam with full desire and the eagerness to pass as if his entire life depended on it. Eventually, when the results came in, he was fortunate to have passed it. He was then grateful for acquiring the scholarship he thinks he deserves.

But upon choosing his course, he decided to take Mechanical Technology for the reason that he wants to get good grades and maintain them consistently. Mechanical Technology is also related to the field of Engineering, the one which he wants most.

He has been a scholar in the university since he first entered college up until now, in his third and final year in his course (Mechanical Technology only comprises three years in college and then one whole year for the OJT before graduation). He said he loves his course just as much as he loves the university in which he is enrolled in. Being an Atenean, he said that he keeps on conforming himself to the values that students need to practice. Subsequently, he tries to be competent in his studies, conscientious of the people around him, and committed to his goals in life.

When asked if he had any difficulties in maintaining his scholarship, he answered, “Naa man, especially sa numbers – sa Physics, sa problem solving – lisud sila. But gina try naku akung best na maka study para ma-maintain ang mga grado.” [There are difficulties, especially in relation to numbers – Physics, in problem solving – they are all difficult. But I try my best to study so that my grades will be maintained]. He also mentioned that whenever he feels tired, stressed (as most hardworking students usually and normally feel), and on the verge of giving up, he always reminded himself about his dream in life. He is very much determined to fulfill it – to become successful through his education and to help his family.

Chan usually studies at five o’clock in the morning. He balances his time in academics and his social life. When asked which of the two he preferred to focus more on, he said that it would be his academics. He believes that his friends in his social circle are good for him, but that his academics more than significant. After all, what a student should do is to study well in order to learn, for that is one of the necessary reasons why a student goes to school. The Q.P.I. that Chan needs to maintain is above 2.50. Because of his hard work and determination, he passed all the subjects that he took and manages to reach a Q.P.I. that is higher than the average.

Chan working on a school project

This photo was captured by Chan’s friend. It was during the time when he visited his friend’s house to study together.

Throughout his years in college, Chan didn’t enroll in summer classes. He said that he prefers to stay and help with his family at home when he isn’t in school and often plays basketball with his younger siblings.

Chan is also motivated by his parents to study hard. He said that his parents give him propelling moral support so that he could achieve his dreams in life. His family is his inspiration to gain the courage to strive further and succeed.

He said that he is ultimately grateful to be a scholar. His education is completely important for him – it is something that he wouldn’t allow to slip from his fingers. He always reminds himself that he is lucky enough to have a scholarship in a prestigious university such as Xavier, and so he must make the most of it. He said, “Without the scholarship, dili ko maka eskwela sa Xavier. Gina try naku akung best para maka pasar sa Xavier. Mao na siya ang way para ma-responsible ko” [Without the scholarship, I will not be able to enter Xavier University. I try my best to pass in Xavier. This is the way to make myself responsible].

When asked what his message to his sponsor is, he said, “Thank you for the support and God bless. My success is your success, too. Without you, I can never be able to reach my dreams.”

He gives his message to his fellow scholars, saying, “Work hard, never give up, make things happen – always believe that everything is possible.”

Chan will finish his college education this school year and will have his OJT next year. And when he is done with his job on training, he will go back to Xavier University for his graduation, and soon earn a degree that would change his and his family’s lives forever, leaving a footprint on the road of his journey towards his own triumphant success.

The possibility of our dreams in life varies from the circumstances we are facing. They may have limits brought about by the challenges, the hardships, and the trials in our lives, but they always have a way to return to us and make us believe that we are capable of achieving them. Chan is an epitome of a dreamer and an achiever. He has a bright and prosperous future ahead of him and he is able to make certain of it by working hard and never giving up in spite of his personal challenges. A student like him would go far. It takes a whole lot of courage to breach the barriers that separate us from our ambitions. It takes a leap of faith to see them happen. It takes a long and grueling journey to reach our destination. It all depends on us. We weave the thread of our fate.

Are dreams achievable?

One student made it possible.

6:00pm – 10:00pm

Program Name: Boys Night Out

Program Hosts: Tony Toni, Slick Rick, and Sam YG

The Topic: Confessing

The Guests: Random Callers

Comments: The program discusses about the confession of love. It is about confessing someone’s love to a friend or a crush and being brave enough to do it. They entertain several people who call them and ask the random callers to share to them their testimony. They also give advices to the ones who need it, to the ones who still have to confess their love to someone.

There weren’t really any violations that I heard in during the airing of this program. Although the format and the idea of the program was funny, the jokes that were shared weren’t offensive and were clean.
